Aging of the face involves a loss of fat, resulting in wrinkles that can cause sunken temples, hollow cheeks, deeper frown and smile lines, thinner lips and a smaller chin. Depressions on the face or body can be corrected by relocating one's own fat cells. During fat transplantation, the fat cells are removed from the patient's buttocks, abdomen or thighs and injected into the face. Some fat becomes absorbed and further fat injections will be necessary.

Newer techniques have increased the longevity of fat transplants between 6-12 months, after which repeat injections are necessary. Natural fat transplants are known to last longer than "non synthetic" injectable products.

The Procedure
A fat transplant is done under local anesthesia during which a very tiny incision is made in the donor site, usually the abdomen. The fat is then centrifuged and reinjected via fine needle cannulas.

Recovery
The patient is asked to massage the areas injected with their fingers several times a day. The patient can usually return to work after 3-4 days.
